Brecon Beacon National Park

The name Brecon Beacon:
The Brecon Beacon National Park is one of the three national parks in Wales and is located in the south-east. The name Brecon derives from a welsh prince, Brychan . The boy´s name Beacon is of old English origin, and it means ``signal light``.

the mountains in Brecon Beacons:
In Brecon Beacon there are a lot of mountains . For example Peny Fan (886 m). which is the highest of them, Corn Du (873m), Cribyn (795m) and Fany Big (719m). These mountains form a bighorseshoe around Taf Fechan River called "the Beacons Horseshoe".

activities:
The National Park was established in 1957. It was designated a geopark in 2005 by UNESCO. Most of the national park is moorland, only a little bit is covered with forests. Popular activities include walking, cycling, riding, sailing, windsurfing, canoening, fishing and rock climbing. There is the "Taff Trail" which passes through the National Park from Brecons to Cardiff.
The park is known for its waterfalls, including the 27-metre "Henrhyd Waterfalls" and the "Ystradfellte Waterfalls" and its caves, such as "Ogof Ffynnon Ddu". Parts of the park are used for military training, the SAS (Special Air Service) holds very dangerous training there.

Near the caves there are about 30 stone circles like "Stonehenge" in England which are scattered all over the National Park. You can see the Monmoutshire Canal, one of the most beautiful canals in Great Britain. There are paths along the canl where you can enjoy the great atmosphere. Or you can visit the Cathedral Showcaves which is a beautful cave. There is also Llanthony Priory: that is a ruin in a beautiful valley. You can collect informations in the Mynydd Illtyd Mountain Centre. From there you can go by a circular train.
